Bertie FitzClarence is a many things to many people – a breaker of promises, a cheat at cards, a wastrel drinking the ancestral bank account dry, a lollygagger, a bounder and a cad. With his fiery red hair and smart-set playboy reputation, he’s well-known everywhere from the Kit Kat Club to the spiels of East London. Fast cars, fast girls and fast money have been Bertie’s chief occupations, until one fateful night at The Embassy on Old Bond Street, when he set eyes on Lou Lou…
Bertie’s never been in love before, and it’s a revelation. He wants to be a brand new man, the best version of himself he can be. Help Bertie to reinvent himself and give him a set of threads smart enough to turn even Lou Lou’s head!
Bertie is colour printed on cotton with underwear, socks, garters and a natty pair of brogues. Instructions, stuffing, a pattern and high-quality fabrics for his shirt, waistcoat, trousers and baker-boy hat are all included, as is his pocket watch (a graduation present – “the only genuinely useful thing I got out of Cambridge”, according to the man himself).
Because one can’t expect a prominent man-about-town such as Bertie to wear the same suit as everyone else, the outfit fabrics included in the kits will be released in limited runs and regularly changed. These will also be available for purchase separately, along with add-on patterns and accessories.
A growing collection of beautiful doll kits inspired by the boudoir dolls of the 1920s, The Doll Collective is a new creative venture from the design team at Sew La Di Da Vintage, for doll admirers of all ages. Lovingly printed in England on quality cotton and complete with stuffing, silver heart, dress pattern and embellishment kit, each doll is ready to be brought to life by your handiwork!
What is a boudoir doll?
A boudoir doll is not a run-of-the-mill rag doll, and to avoid causing offence, it is highly advisable never to let one of them overhear you describe her as such!
In 1920s Europe and America, instead of cushions, it was fashionable to have soft bodied dolls adorning your bed or sofa. These were not meant to be played with as such, being decorative objects, but that certainly didn’t mean that they were left untouched! These dolls became the must-have accessory for well-to-do women of the age; ladies of high fashion, when having a new outfit created for them, would take home the offcuts and while away the hours creating and stitch away a little outfit for their boudoir doll. Then both would display their splendid new finery at whichever club, tearoom or party was the current place to see and be seen! There are many photographs of flappers with their boudoir doll, or poupee, in matching or complementing styles, embodying the frivolity and girlishness that the era prized.
Boudoir dolls continued to be made through to the 1940s, although during this time, the inevitable impact of the war was felt, and materials were scarce. Their popularity waned, and eventually dolls became consigned back to the nursery…
We think it’s time they came back out to play.

Are the dolls suitable for children?
As the dolls’ features are printed, they are suitable for children – however, we do not take any responsibility for them once embellishments are attached. If you intend to make the doll for a child, please consider the age of the child and their suitability when deciding which embellishments to add, as young children can choke on buttons.
Do I have to hand sew the dolls?
Not at all; we’ve designed the dolls so that they can be machine sewn, but if you prefer to do things the old fashioned way, you can of course hand sew them – but if you’re itching to get your doll made, you’ll find it quick and easy to pop them on the sewing machine. The embellishments, as always, would probably be best hand sewn on, or you could always use fabric glue!
I’m missing part of the kit! What do I do?
Don’t worry! As our dolls are hand packed by real humans, unfortunately there is the possibility of very occasional oversights – please accept our sincere apologies, and contact email@example.com so we can send you out the missing part straight away.
I’m really pleased with my doll and the back story I’ve created for her – is there somewhere I can share images and details?
Yes please – we’re really excited about seeing how you style your dolls, where you take them, and who they become! Tag your pictures on twitter and Instagram with @(intsagram address) and use the hashtag #thedollcollective and the name of your doll, upload them to our facebook page or email them to firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll add them to our gallery. Each month we’ll choose our favourite, and the lucky doll will receive an exclusive discount code to use on www.thedollcollective.co.uk!
I love the dress pattern – do you make them for humans?
Our parent company, Sew La Di Da Vintage, is an independent pattern company specialising in vintage inspired designs cut to fit and flatter the modern body. All of our patterns are sized to the UK high street, so if you get inspired by our classic shapes and fancy adding a touch of vintage glamour to your home sewing repertoire, it couldn’t be easier to find and make the right pattern for you! And if you’re not used to making full-size garments, why not join us for a workshop at our studio in Lyme Regis, and make your dress is two days?
I’ve got some feedback for you. Where should I send it?
Feedback is really important to us; as a small, independent company, feedback from our community is the best way for us to improve our service and your experience. Please email email@example.com with your comments.
